Electric or Acoustic Guitar - Which is Right for You?

So you've chosen to take up the guitar. Good for you! Now comes the hard part: which guitar is the best to start playing on? Well, the answer to that question depends on many things. It depends on what kind of music you enjoy listening to, what kind of music you are looking to play, and what kind of level you wish to reach--amateur or professional.

Before we go over each topic, let us first discuss the differences between Electric and Acoustic guitars.

The main difference between an Electric and Acoustic guitar is the fact that the Electric must be plugged into an amplifier in order to be heard loudly, while the Acoustic can be played and heard without the use of an amp. This is because Acoustic guitars have sound holes, which produce the sound. Electric guitars, on the other hand, don't have a sound hole and are thus known as Hollow-body's. Electric hollow-body's can be heard by the people playing them, but are inaudible to others without the use of an amp. Additionally, there are Electric guitars with the ability to be played both acoustically and electrically because they have little sound holes. These are known as semi-hollow bodies and are very versatile because they can sound one way unplugged and another way on an amp. Finally, there are some Acoustic guitars, known as Acoustic-Electric's, that can be played acoustically or on an amp. However, these are very different from semi-hollow bodies, because they sound pretty much the same unplugged or plugged--the only difference being that the Acoustic-Electric when plugged into the amp.

OK, now that we've briefly gone over the different types of Acoustic and Electric guitars, we can now move on to the criteria for choosing a guitar.

The Music You Enjoy Helps You Decide What Guitar to Buy: Let's start off with the first topic. Obviously, those who enjoy listening to a certain kind of music are most likely going to want to play it on guitar. That is why you must take this into consideration when looking for a guitar. Choosing the wrong type of guitar could lead to frustration and giving up the instrument all together. Do you enjoy rock music--metal, modern, alternative and otherwise? Then chances are a hollow-body electric guitar is a wise choice. If that is the Case, you will also want to purchase an amp. But what if you like rock music that makes use of both acoustic and electric guitar? Then perhaps a semi-hollow body guitar is the best choice. Or maybe you don't like rock and instead enjoy country or mellow music. Acoustic or Acoustic-Electric guitar is then your best bet.

What Kind of Music Do You Want to Play?: Maybe you're a big rock fan, but would rather learn to play mellow, acoustic-based songs. That's perfectly fine, and if that's the genre you wish to play, you definitely want to pick up an Acoustic or Acoustic-Electric guitar. It's also possible that you're a big fan of acoustic-pop but want to start playing rock & roll. Do yourself a favor and pick up a semi-hollow or hollow body guitar.

What Level Do You Wish to Achieve?: Are you just taking up the guitar for recreational purposes and not looking to form a band or master the instrument? The Electric guitar is probably a good choice. This is because Electric guitars are much easier to start playing on than Acoustics are. Electrics have thinner strings (which are easier to start playing on) and, when plugged into an amp, allow room for error. Beginner mistakes can be easily covered up with Electric guitars. However, you cannot expect to make mistakes and be a pro. Acoustic guitars do not cover up your mistakes at all--if anything, they highlight them. You are forced to play songs correctly and master techniques the right way. The learning curve of an Acoustic is steeper, but you will reap the rewards if you master it. A transition from Acoustic to Electric guitar will be incredibly easy, whereas a transition from Electric to Acoustic guitar will be a bit harder. Thinking about what you want to accomplish on the guitar is a big factor in your decision.

Martin DSM Solid Top Dreadnought Mahogany-Spruce Acoustic Guitar

This acoustic guitar from Martin packs a massive amount of tone into a guitar with a genuinely good price tag, especially considering it's a Martin. It's great news for any guitarist looking to get their first Martin or anyone interested in upgrading into the top bracket of acoustic guitar manufacturers.

The DSM stands Dreadnought Spruce Mahogany referring to the woods used in the construction of the guitar. The top is solid spruce while the back and sides are built from Mahogany along with the neck. It also features a morado fretboard and bridge. So what does all of that add up to? Well, beautifully warm tones full of earth and feeling, that's what.

Something Martin are excellent at is X bracing and this creates a very bright and open sound which is at the same time balanced and will certainly fill a room. Review of CA Guitars (Composite Acoustics) 7iM-CE, I Series

You may have heard about the new I Series from CA Guitars (Composite Acoustics), yet wonder about how the instruments sound. "Wow!" was my first thought upon playing a 7iM-CEfor the first time. CA Guitars' statement that the I Series models have "a deeper low end response than most acoustic guitars" is definitely an understatement. The low E and A strings have the deep, mellow, resonance of an upright bass, but, that bass does not overpower the mids and highs. It almost sounds as though two separate instruments are being played. I like to play a slow version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", plucking out the melody on the high E and B strings, while plucking out the chord root notes on the bass strings. It sounds as though I've got a bass player playing along. I played the same tune strumming a full chord, too, instead of just the root note, and the 7iM-CE produced a full, resonant sound.

Next, I used a glass slide. Carbon fiber guitars are great for slide playing: You do not get the same resonance and sustain as you would from a resophonic guitar, yet you do get much better resonance and sustain than you would from a wooden acoustic guitar. And, you won't get that metallic sound with carbon fiber. The 7iM-CE compares well with a slide compared to other carbon fiber guitars, although with a deeper, slightly more resonant tone, along with bit of a metallic sound (although nothing like the tone that comes from a resophonic guitar).

Many guitarists purchase carbon fiber guitars for the convenience of not having to worry about humidity and temperature changes. Yet, with CA Guitars new i Series, I believe that people will buy for the sound first, and the worry-free aspect will be an added bonus.

This guitar is great in every application you could use it for.

It plays great, has almost zero dead spots, great factory setup, very little fret buzz for all playing styles, solos like an electric but sounds like an acoustic.

Produces amazing tone and sound quality through almost any set up, isn't hard on your back when standing (obviously), GREAT for recording. Plays jazz guitar the best.

Only drawback: must use expensive batteries; it drains the cheap ones really quickly. Or just use phantom power.

Would definitely pay list price for this model.

I have 3 guitars & this one is by far my favorite. I'm only 5'1 and small framed & this guitar is a perfect fit for me. The body is thinner than an acoustic & thicker than an electric. The on board tuner is great. This guitar sounds nice plugged in or on it's own. I love it!

I'm an advanced beginner-intermediate level guitar player who is exploring and learning different musical styles. I had to travel halfway across the world to asia and was looking around for a travel friendly guitar. The Yamaha silent guitar offered a reasonable priced option coupled with an artistic appearance. Aesthetically, this guitar is like a work of art. I love the minimalist look of the guitar and the build quality and finish of the guitar was excellent. But does it play well?

I got to test the guitar at a local music store and ended buying it from them. I really like the playability of the guitar, but I had to set it up a little first before it was acceptable to me. The frets were a little short beyond the 12th fret, making it a little difficult to press barre chords from the 12th fret and beyond. Also, the pickup is rather limited in terms of produceable sounds limiting it to mostly acoustic playing. The guitar has a volume, bass and treble adjustment. There's also a switch to control the amount of reverb. The reverb options sound really good but it does drains the 9V battery faster. There's also a jack with volume control that enables the guitarist to listen to a song while playing the guitar by plugging in an external music player using the included earphones, a feature I found very useful for practicing. Overall, the guitar plays and sounds like a good electric acoustic guitar.

When not plugged in, the guitar still produces clearly audible sounds that's still sufficient for practicing if one doesn't mind the softer sound. As expected, the unplugged guitar sounds just like an electric guitar that's not plugged in.

The guitar has a detachable segment that effectively halfs the width of the guitar. The guitar fits in the overhead bin (larger ones) of a Boeing 737, 747 and 777. The guitar does come with a carrying case and I gave the guitar further protection by wrapping a piece of cloth around the headstock of the guitar before putting it in the airplane's overhead compartment. There were basically no complaints from any of the airline personnel. The guitar survived perfectly the entire 24 hour (per direction) roundtrip which included a good amount of walking around and taking various forms of public transport. The case has several compartments for one to keep accessories and books. However during my travel, one of the handles almost tore off, I'm guessing its really due to me putting too many books into the bag (I had 4, ~100 pg. guitar books in it! too many!!).

I've been playing guitar for 3 years and I just received the Yamaha APX500 Thinline Acoustic-Electric Cutaway in the Natural Finish.

I LOVE THIS GUITAR !!!

For starters I'm 5'5" with small hands and the thinness and small size of this guitar fits me perfectly. This would be a great guitar for a child to learn on as it will not overpower them. I wish I had this guitar for my 1st guitar.

Features:
I really like the built-in tuner and auto shut down. Buy this guitar and you don't have to buy a tuner. I thought I would not like the fact the APX500 does not come with a pick guard, but the oval sound hole allows for a little over strumming without the pick hitting and scratching the soundboard.

Sound:
Okay, the guitar is on the small side but the engineers at Yamaha have designed a full (unplugged) sound. It is incredible really. I own dreadnoughts and love the sound, but the APX (unplugged) sounds great. Now I will admit the APX500 lacks the "Boom" of a dreadnought, but this negative becomes a positive because this allows you to sing along while playing and you do not have to sing loud to be heard over the guitar. Of course if you want a louder sound, and sometimes you will, just plug it in!

Action, Fit, & Finish:
I like "low" action (strings close to the fretboard) on my guitars. On my dreadnoughts I had to take them to a guitar tech to have the action lowered. Not on my APX500. The action was perfect right out of the box. The finish is beautiful and you won't be disappointed by the looks of any of the models.

Tuners and Strings:
The Tuners are very smooth. The strings that come on the guitar are great. I just don't know the size of the strings. I think they are medium acoustics.


Overall:
What a great guitar. Again, perfect for someone with small hands. The sound (plugged or unplugged) is magnificent and the built-in tuner and piezo amp system is flawless. The fact I had to wait 2 months for a back order on this guitar speaks volumes on how popular the APX500 is. The people can't be wrong.

The neck is SLICK, man. I just love the action on this guitar, and I love its size and its tone through headphones or through an amp. I bought it with low expectations, but immediately began to appreciate its many virtues.
I made a couple small changes: I put in a battery disconnect switch. I painted all the raised lettering at the various controls with white paint to make the lettering easily legible, and I padded the upper bout. None of these changes is a big deal or really affects in any way the quality (which is truly five star) of the guitar. Just cosmetics, really, although I think Yamaha should incorporate these ideas in a future version of the guitar. They should also build in an electronic tuner, since there's plenty of room to do so. (I use a Korg Chromatic Tuner CA-30 on my Silent Guitar, mounted with small succion cups and jacked in to the guitar jack.)
All in all this is just a fabulous instrument. It's perfect if you live in a house where other people are bothered by your guitar habit, because a few feet away another person won't even hear it, while you are personally enjoying big fat gorgeous tone at adequate volume. What can I say? It's my favorite guitar out of the half dozen I own.
Oh, yeah--I didn't mention the tuning machines! They are REALLY good ones! Much better than the standard tuning machines one usually finds on mass-produced guitars. There's no visible brand name on the tuners, so I suppose they are made Yamaha itself. Very good tuners!

I live in an apartment building and have had difficulty finding practice space. The Yamaha SLG guitar runs on a nine volt transitor radio battery and allows me to practice with headphones without bothering my neighbors. (Note: This guitar is not 100% silent, however it is much, much quieter than a standard guitar and as such is not likely to bother your neighbors "as much", if at all.) The unplugged sound is about as loud as picking an unplugged Fender Strat.

I would buy this guitar again for the silent feature. Although this guitar will fold up for easy carry-on, I don't think that the guitar will fit in an airplane overhead compartment due to its length.
